Adult lessons – How to deal with embarrassment

There can be times while sitting at the edge of the rink whilst your child is practicing their latest skills or having a lesson, it’s possible to get jealous of their ability to glide across the ice gracefully.

You would think there is an easy solution; Sign up for Adult lessons, six 30-mins lessons for £36 at https://aura.wales/leisure/deeside-ice-rink/
WARNINGS;
– Ice skates hurt your feet, or at least the ones I was wearing for the 1st lesson. Supposedly it is very common with hire skates. In hindsight, I should have got off the ice to exchange them for a different style or size.
– Some people might find  being the only skater in the group to be offered a “Polar bear” to use quite embarrassing. Quite simply, skating and myself didn’t quite gel  rather than shrink with embarrassment   I decided to  celebrate my ineptitude and enjoy the extra attention I was being given by the spectators , many of whom I have sat next to for the last year watching our children progressing though the skating levels.

Will I be back on the ice next week? We will have to wait and see.

Update (23/09/18)
I return the following week but then stopped as it was clear to nearly everybody that should treat myself to a couple of private lessons before hitting the ice again.

Introduction

Last weekend I was sitting in the cold next to the rink at Deeside leisure centre, separated from the action on the ice by the thick perspex screen. In strange way it is a good place to think; after it all it was 12 months since “Sglefrwr Bach” had taken up ice skating.

Every Saturday morning traveling to a different country, to watch her group lessons with practice afterwards, 9:30am to begin with then 9am as she progressed though the levels.  Nodding to people who we would see each week but then disappear as their children drop out in order to pursue other interests. Learning new terminology such as “zucabag”, “backward crossovers”.

Do I regret the words “Would you like to have some lessons?” No, not yet.
